Every program teaches the game safely, with trained coaches. Not sure? Flag is a great first step at any age.
Find your player’s birth year to see their age group for the 2026–27 season.
Why tackle and flag years differ: tackle age groups move up each fall, and players stay in that group through the next spring/summer season. Flag divisions are set by the 2027 calendar year. U8 is non-contact only; tackle starts at U10. A club may move a player up or down a group with league approval.

Do we also need to register with Football Ontario?

My child has never played. Can they still join?
Yes. Community flag and tackle programs are built for beginners, and the youngest age groups start with the basics. First Down is designed for children under 8.
Can girls play?
Yes. Girls play flag and tackle in Ontario. The Ontario Women’s Football League runs girls’ tackle from U13 to U18, flag has girls’ and women’s divisions, and Women’s Futures camps develop female athletes.
Flag or tackle: which should we choose?
Flag is non-contact and a great first step at any age. Tackle teaches contact skills under certified Safe Contact coaches. Many players do both.
When does registration open?
Each club sets its own dates, and many leagues play in summer or fall seasons. Check your club’s site, or email them, to find out when registration opens.
What equipment do we need?
For flag, athletic clothing and cleats are usually enough. For tackle, ask your club which equipment it supplies and what you need to buy.
