Football Ontario Accepting Applications for Assistant Coaching Positions

Hamilton, Ontario – Tommy Kanichis has been named the new Head Coach for the Team Ontario U18 Male Tackle Program. Coach Kanichis will serve a two year term through 2026 with a third year option for the 2027 High Performance season.

Tommy Kanichis was named to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues coaching staff as their Offensive Coordinator this past February. Kanichis came to the Blues with a decade of experience on the sidelines. Most recently, he served as the Queen’s Gaels Halfbacks Coach, Offensive Line Assistant and Recruiting Coach during the 2023 season. Prior to this, Kanichis was the associate Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach for the Saint Mary’s Huskies from 2020-23. His other U SPORTS football stint came at the University of Waterloo, when he served as the Running Backs Coach, Offensive Line Assistant and Scouting Coordinator for the Warriors from 2017-20. Kanichis also served as the offensive coordinator for Team East at the 2022 U SPORTS East West Bowl.

Coach Kanichis has also previously coached on the national stage, serving as the Offensive Coordinator with Team Nova Scotia. He has also coached the North Halton Crimson Tide of the OSFL and the Ottawa Sooners of the OFC. Tommy is a former U Sports athlete, playing from 2013-2016 with the Carleton Ravens.

“I am thrilled and honoured beyond words to embark on this journey as Head Coach for Team Ontario U18 Football Tackle program. Together, we’ll elevate the game, inspire greatness, and forge a relentless pursuit for excellence in all we do . Our goals are to make every moment count, be leaders in our communities and represent our program and our province with pride. We will strive to be a well rounded program creating a boisterous experience that embodies pride, belief, an “all in” ego-less  approach and a pursuit for excellence led by a staff that has no bigger focus than the development and mentorship of those they serve.” says Coach Kanichis.

Coach Kanichis will work closely alongside Football Ontario and the Football Ontario High-Performance Committee in order to implement a plan to help continue to grow, develop, and sustain the success of the U18 Male Tackle Program.

Tommy will play an integral part in identifying, developing, and preparing high-performance athletes and coaches in order to be best prepared for the Canada Cup in the summer of 2025.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome Coach Tommy Kanichis to our Team Ontario family. His extensive experience and unwavering commitment to the development of young athletes align perfectly with our vision for the future. Tommy’s dynamic coaching style and proven track record make him the ideal leader to build upon the solid foundation laid by his predecessor. We are confident that under his leadership, Team Ontario will reach new heights and continue to set the standard for excellence in youth football.” says Aaron Geisler, CEO of Football Ontario.
