The Second Annual Football Weekend in Ontario to be held November 24-25
Hamilton, Ontario – Football Ontario has announced the second annual Football weekend in Ontario. The event will be held November 24th and November 25th and will be hosted in Kingston at Queen’s University.
“We are very excited to partner with Football Ontario as part of our 2023 Vanier Cup Festivities at Richardson Stadium,” said Linda Melnick, Executive Director, Queen’s Athletics & Recreation. “Queen’s has a strong football tradition and collaborating with Football Ontario on both the Canadian Collegiate Women’s Flag Showcase and 1st Down ‘Try Football Day’ is part of our ongoing commitment to growth and inclusion in football while strengthening community engagement through sport.”
The organization is excited to showcase all of the football talents and minds this country has participating or competing in the sport.
The highlights of the weekend include the Canadian Collegiate Women’s Flag Showcase, the Football Canada 1st Down ‘Try Football Day’, as well as the Vanier Cup Championship Game.
“Football Ontario is thrilled to host the second annual Football Weekend in Ontario, showcasing the incredible football talents and minds across the country. From the Canadian Collegiate Women’s Flag Showcase to the 1st Down ‘Try Football’ Day, this weekend will unite football enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels. Join us in celebrating the spirit of the game in conjunction with the Vanier Cup on November 24-25 at Queen’s University” says Aaron Geisler, Executive Director, Football Ontario.
The Canadian Collegiate Women’s Flag Showcase will host twelve women’s flag football teams, from both Ontario and Quebec, all competing in a single day tournament to be held on Friday, November 24th.
Action will get underway at 10:00am EST with round robin play, playoffs are set to start at 3:00pm, with the Championship Game to be played at 5:30p.m EST.
The Championship Game will be held at Richardson Memorial Stadium with all other games to take place at Miklas-McCarney Field. Following the championship game, the winning team will be celebrated at the Kingston Market Square as a part of the Vanier Festivities.
Participating teams will also be attending the Vanier Cup and will be acknowledged at the game.
“I am extremely excited that OWIFA, Queen’s University, and Football Ontario have delivered on bringing back the CCWF for an even better second year. 5v5 flag football was recently recognized as an Olympic Sport in the 2028 LA Olympic Games. It only makes sense to continue to feature and promote flag football as a high performance and access pathway for women in football at Canadian universities and colleges. Aligning our advocacy for women in football with a USports Football Championship is the best opportunity to grow the game. We will feature athletes and teams that have or are currently representing Canada on the International and World stage. Queen’s has supported us in this full heartedly including field space and outreach. NFL Canada and a local equipment company (Cooper Equipment Rentals) will support us in prizing and keeping us warm on the field. We couldn’t be more excited!” says Olivia Ghosh-Swaby, Executive Director of OWIFA.

The event will take place from 9:30am – 11:30am on Miklas-McCarney Field.
Football Canada’s First Down Program helps get kids under the age of eight moving and active while having fun. The goal is to help develop their movement abilities and foster further participation in physical activity or sport.
